“It may be hard
for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to
learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you
cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be
hatched or go bad.” - C. S. Lewis
This week the theme of Poets United is “Birds”. My contribution below:
From Egg to Earth
The egg has just hatched
And the nestling dreams sweetly;
As flower buds unfurl.
This week the theme of Poets United is “Birds”. My contribution below:
From Egg to Earth
The egg has just hatched
And the nestling dreams sweetly;
As flower buds unfurl.
The bird sings
joyful
Songs, in noon’s white blinding heat,
Hidden in leafy bower.
Songs, in noon’s white blinding heat,
Hidden in leafy bower.
As golden leaves fall,
The bird eggs on its offspring,
To leave the nest, fly.
Snow falls and covers
The dead bird: A life cycle ends;
Soon, new beginnings.
A sad ending for poor little bird..........but I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of the unfolding of both nestling and seasons. It made me think how hard winters must be on very young birds........
ReplyDeleteCycle of life... Inevitable and yet able to cause so much joy and pain.
ReplyDeleteLove this - such wonderful descriptions in your poem :D
ReplyDeleteIs the amazing illustration above your own art? Wow. The Quote, too, moves me--the two together are quite a prep for "From Egg to Earth" which plays with images, matching hatchlings with flower buds, eggs with being egged on, and seasons' play on leaves with the fledglings progress. Fine poem.
ReplyDeleteah...yes Egg to Earth and songs in between, beautifully penned...love the image of the bird hidden in leafy bower singing loudly in the blazing heat of midday...a successful life, i must say...
ReplyDeleteThis is so very sad really. Oftentimes among the births occur the deaths in the bird world. But yes, the snow covers the dead bird....and life goes on. We can learn so much from observing nature's ways.
ReplyDeleteGreat capture on the cycle of life and the year.
ReplyDeleteSad, but so beautifully said.
ReplyDeleteOnly the fittest survive which in our humanity we often fail to grasp. It is not all about us now but ensuring the species continues with the most able. Life even in all its beauty is still intent on its continuance not just for one lifetime.
ReplyDeleteAnother fine example of a quote being gestated - not simply an illustration - their is a tenderness and strength in the cycle you describe beautifully here - like an egg itself
ReplyDeletea very telling haiku sequence, a candid cycle of life presented
ReplyDeletemuch love...
Oh, how I pity these short-lived feathered friends...beautifully composed.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's hard watching nature as it can end with so little fanfare. I think we are wiser for our observation. You do a wonderful job sequencing spring as she opens up to the sun.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful poem about the cycle of life...
