POETS UNITED - FAITH

“Faith makes all things possible. Love makes all things easy.” - Dwight L. Moody

The Midweek Motif at Poets United this week is “Faith”. Here is my contribution:

Faith

My soul a hollow shell;
My heart an empty echoing place
In whose vacant chambers
Cold loneliness shuffles its steps.

My life a barren void;
My sweet dreams annulled
All hopes sublimated
In the wake of your bitter renunciation.

My spirit vacuous;
My routine existence lost
In a desert of frozen wastelands
As I attempt to cope with betrayal.

Shall I attempt trust again?
Shall I believe in seemingly ingenuous smiles?
Shall I ever be able to risk all again?
Shall I walk the tightrope of love once more?

How much more simple to wander the desert,
Trust only the promise of a certain, rapid death
As my parched heart and soul quickly dehydrate
And my lifeblood thickens, clots, solidifies.
Love is the half-remembered nightmare
That hastens me on my spiralling downward plunge
Into the pointless peregrinations
Within a vast desert in which there is no hidden oasis.
Once faith is lost, it is not easily found again.

  1. How much more simple to wander the desert,
    Trust only the promise of a certain, rapid death... that sense of hopelessness is wonderfully expressed here.

  2. Powerful. In my mind I wanted to object, but I was pulled into the safety of the desert and now find myself full of grief. Wow.

  3. Faith lost. Faith found. Faith lost again. So the story goes for many of us. The world is a desert to some, an Eden to others. The faith as small as a mustard seed can sustain us in either place, don't you think?

  4. when "Love is the half-remembered nightmare" then "Trust" is "only the promise of a certain, rapid death"....I love the progression of this poem and the image of the desert so perfectly fits in...

  5. I am moved by the honesty of this piece--how we each struggle to find our way through this morass

  8. Yes, when faith is lost, it is not easy to to risk love again. I really resonated with your words, Nicholas. But life itself can become our lover. Mother Nature has always been mine, such a source of beauty and comfort.

  9. True...when faith is lost it is hard to find it again.Sit down and play the 48 prelude and fugues and your faith in the Divine entity will be restored immediately . Enjoyed this poem and hope it is not autobiographical.

  10. Sad. But life is a desert without faith and it's hard to find the way back to love. You captured this truth beautifully. Makes me realize how important it is to not allow myself to lose faith.

  11. So many have probably gone through this but hope is persistent and doesn't flee willingly away.
