POETS UNITED - NEUTRALITY

“The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.” - Dante Alighieri

The mid-week motif at Poets United this week is “Neutrality/Objectivity”. The challenge is to: “Create a new poem that explores one instance of neutrality or objectivity. Try NOT to be either neutral or objective.”
Here is mine:

The Sick Planet

No sense in sitting on the fence,
On this issue, nobody should be neutral.
The earth has need of us, now –
There’s no time left to postpone decisions
That already should have been made.

No point in talking of superficial changes,
Shallow beautification is not the target;
Applying stop-gap measures, blindly
Will only cause problems to escalate.
Rebirth needs effort, pain and many sacrifices.

Let our inspiration be a new world
Rid of its poisons by audacious strategies.
Let the cathartic processes be drastic, let us renew,
Revive nature, rejuvenate the ailing planet,
Let’s give our children back their future.

  1. Amen! "Rebirth needs effort, pain and many sacrifices"--why even pretend there are two sides to this argument!? I can't even imagine saying an oppositional prayer.

  2. Oh this is soo beautiful and poignant both at the same time. Especially moved by "Shallow beautification is not the target; applying stop-gap measures, blindly will only cause problems to escalate. Rebirth needs effort, pain and many sacrifices."

  4. Sadly we are so easily manipulated by our own greed for the crumbs offered to us. We know what is right but our consumerism prevents us from thinking straight.

Very timely assertion but many still in throes of enjoyment and not willing to sacrifice!

  9. Desperate times call for desperate measures! There is no room for neutrality in a world that does not care about the place of its people, whether they live in its present or the future.

  10. Sorry to be pessimistic but it is too late already. It will take a huge disaster of global impact affecting the first world countries before it is really taken seriously. Greed has blinded everyone on the planet to s a horrifying extent Affluenza is a rampant disease and seemingly without a cure.
