Skiathos (Greek: Σκιάθος, romanized: Skiáthos) is a small Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea. Skiathos is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades archipelago, east of the Pelion peninsula in Magnesia on the mainland, and west of the island of Skopelos. The main town is Skiathos (pop. 4,883 in 2011), in the eastern part of the island. Skiathos and its neighbouring island Skopelos were the filming locations of the 2008 film “Mamma Mia!”.

There are over 60 beaches, including the white-pebbled Lalaria Beach, the pine-fringed Koukounaries, and the energetic Banana Beach. Skiathos Town (Hora) is very picturesque and you can stroll through cobbled alleys filled with whitewashed houses, dine at open-air tavernas, and enjoy the buzzing nightlife around the Old Port. One can hike up to the historic Evangelistria Monastery or explore the medieval sea fortress at the Bourtzi Peninsula. Low-flying aircraft land just metres above the sand at the famously short Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport runway - a favourite location for plane spotters!

A 14th-century medieval fortified town is perched dramatically over the northern cliffs. Built to protect locals from pirate raids, you can hike through its atmospheric ruins and enjoy stunning, windy sea views. Tucked high in the pine-covered mountains, the Evangelistria Monastery is peaceful, although active with resident monks. It holds a massive place in Greek history—it’s where the first official Greek flag was woven and blessed in 1807. The monks still produce local wine, olive oil, and honey today.

Alexandros Papadiamantis (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος Παπαδιαμάντης 4 March 1851 – 3 January 1911) was an influential Greek novelist, short-story writer and poet who was born in Skiathos. The Papadiamantis House Museum is a museum dedicated to the writer. Following his death, his house was transformed into a modern museum with displays related to his life and attracts many visitors.

Samos is a lush, mountainous Greek island located in the eastern Aegean Sea, just a short distance from the Turkish coast. Samos was home to the famous mathematician Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus, and the astronomer Aristarchus. You can explore ancient ruins at the Pythagoreion and the Heraion of Samos, which include the remains of a massive temple to Hera and an ancient underground aqueduct, a marvel of ancient technology and engineering . In ancient times, the island was a rich and powerful maritime centre that rivaled Athens.

Samos Town, also called Vathy (shown here), is the main port with traditional houses, shops, and waterfront dining. Pythagorio is a pretty harbour town built over the ancient city, featuring paved streets, a lively marina, and the statue of Pythagoras. Kokkari is a charming northern fishing village popular with visitors for its relaxed vibe and nearby beaches. Unlike drier Greek islands, Samos features thick pine forests, high mountains, waterfalls (like the Potami Gorge), and scenic hiking trails. The island is famous worldwide for its golden, aromatic sweet Muscat wine, produced here since ancient times. Traditional mountain villages like Manolates offer local food, fresh produce, and handmade crafts.

The Samian economy depends mainly on agriculture and the tourist industry which was growing steadily since the early 1980s and reached a peak at the end of the 1990s. The main agricultural products include grapes, honey, olives, olive oil, citrus fruit, dried figs, almonds and flowers. The Muscat grape is the main crop used for wine production. Samian wine is also exported under several other appellations.

Samos is home to many animal species including the golden jackal, stone marten, wild boar, flamingos and monk seal. It is also one of the most lush and biologically diverse islands in the Aegean Sea, home to over 1,000 to 1,500 plant species and rare endemic varieties. Wild thyme, oregano, rosemary, and sage grow abundantly across hillsides and hiking paths. Samos hosts rare plants like Dactylorhiza pythagorae (an orchid named after Pythagoras) and critically endangered species like Consolida samia (Console of Samos), alongside localized blooms like the Samos Crocus.  Wild olive trees, carob trees, cedar, strawberry trees (arbutus), myrtle, and heather are also abundant. Pine trees cover the slopes of mountains, along with dense groves of oak, chestnut, plane trees, and cypresses.

Vanuatu is an archipelagic nation in Melanesia, located in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of roughly 83 volcanic islands forming an irregular Y-shape, situated about 1,750 kilometres east of northern Australia. Known for its incredible cultural diversity, active volcanoes, and pristine marine life, it is a premier destination for adventure and tropical travel.

The capital is Port Vila, located on the island of Efate and it has a population of 56,352 residents (Vanuatu total population is 343,000 people). Languages spoken are Bislama (national pidgin English), English, and French, alongside over 100 indigenous languages. The climate is subtropical, featuring a warm, wet season (November to April) and a cooler, dry season (May to October).

Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture. It is a tropical island chain known for clear turquoise waters, coral reefs, and a distinct Ryukyu cultural heritage. The region spans over 160 islands, featuring warm weather year-round, world-class scuba diving, and a relaxed pace of life. The largest and most populous island is Okinawa Island, which hosts the capital city, Naha, as well as major urban centers such as Okinawa, Uruma, and Urasoe.

Many attractions ensure a perfect holiday for all. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: Located in Ocean Expo Park on the main island, famous for its massive main tank housing giant whale sharks. The Bahamas is an independent archipelagic nation located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and southeast of the United States. Comprising nearly 700 islands and 2,500 cays, this constitutional monarchy recognizes King Charles III as its head of state and is led politically by Prime Minister Philip Davis. Located 780 km northeast of Sydney, Lord Howe Island is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed paradise. It limits tourist numbers to 400 at any one time to preserve its pristine environment. Accessible via a 2-hour flight from Sydney, the island is famous for its beaches, the world’s southernmost coral reef, and hiking trails.

Getting to the island is entirely by air. QantasLink offers daily, year-round flights from Sydney (under 2 hours). Additionally, Eastern Air Services operates flights and charters departing from Port Macquarie, the Gold Coast, and Newcastle. Once you arrive, there are no private cars, and most of the terrain is pedestrian-friendly. The primary mode of transportation is hiring bicycles or walking.

Because the island is relatively small (about 10 km long), everything is easily accessible. The best time to travel there is during the shoulder seasons—September to November and March to May. These months offer the perfect balance of warm, pleasant weather (averaging 20˚C to 22˚C) for hiking, while the ocean remains warm enough for swimming and snorkeling.

Home to more than 130 species of birds, it is a haven for birders. Highlights include seeing red-tailed tropicbirds performing courting rituals near the Malabar cliffs and watching countless shearwaters return at dusk. The trek up the towering Mount Gower is world-famous, offering breathtaking views of the subtropical landscape. You can drop into the Lord Howe Island Museum to learn about the region's unique biodiversity, history, and scientific specimens

Samothrace (or Samothraki) is a rugged, unspoiled Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. Famous for its wild natural beauty—including sweeping waterfalls, 100+ natural rock pools, and majestic Mount Saos—it is the ancient home of the iconic Winged Victory of Samothrace statue (now in the Louvre) and the mystic Sanctuary of the Great Gods (which you can visit on the island).

Unlike the typical sun-baked Greek islands, Samothrace is intensely green. Fed by sixty freshwater springs, the landscape offers lush plane tree woodlands, dramatic gorges, and wild swimming in crystal-clear alpine pools. There are many hiking paths as well as guided tours which you can enjoy under the care of local guides who walk with you and ensure you don’t miss anything of note.

The Sanctuary of the Great Gods (known in Greek as Ieró tōn Megálōn Theōn) on the island was one of the most prestigious, sacred, and enigmatic religious centres of the ancient Pan-Hellenic world. Operating from at least the 7th century BCE until the 4th century CE, it was the home of the famous Samothracian Mysteries—a secret cult whose initiation rites promised protection from shipwreck at sea and a transformative path to moral improvement. Unlike other cities where status dictated power, this cult welcomed everyone, regardless of gender, social standing, or nationality. The deities worshipped there were collectively referred to as the Kabeiroi or simply "The Gods". Speaking their individual names out loud was strictly taboo. The Hellenistic statue of the goddess Nike (circa 200 BCE) was excavated here in 1863 and now famously resides in the Louvre in Paris.

Mount Fengari rises to 1,611 meters and is the highest peak in the Aegean Sea. Myth has it that Poseidon sat on this mountain to watch the Trojan War.  The Waterpools (Vathres) lend themselves to exploration. Canyoning and hiking to the cascading waterfalls and deep rock pools—such as the famous Fonias river—are a staple of any visit. Pachia Ammos is the island's most notable stretch of sand, framed by dramatic cliffs. Chora is the island's main village, nestled in the mountains above the port. It features winding stone alleys, traditional cafes, and a medieval fortress.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of Spain's Canary Islands, renowned for its year-round mild climate, the iconic Playa de Las Canteras beach, and a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere blending European, African, and Latin influences. As a city of over 383,000 residents, it offers historic, colonial architecture in Vegueta and bustling, modern shopping areas in Triana.

Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometres off the southeastern coast of East Africa, east of Madagascar. It includes the main island (also called Mauritius), as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon (Cargados Carajos shoals). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, along with nearby Réunion (a French overseas department), are part of the Mascarene Islands. The main island of Mauritius, where the population is concentrated, hosts the capital and largest city, Port Louis. The country spans 2,040 square kilometres and has an exclusive economic zone covering 2,300,000 square kilometres.

Given its geographic location and colonial past, the people of Mauritius are diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and faith. It is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the most practised religion. Indo-Mauritians make up the bulk of the population with significant Creole, Sino-Mauritian and Franco-Mauritian minorities. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system with Mauritius highly ranked for economic and political freedom. The Economist Democracy Index ranks Mauritius as the only country in Africa with full democracy.

Mauritius ranks 72nd (high) in the Human Development Index and the World Bank classifies it as a high-income economy. It is amongst the most competitive and most developed economies in the African region. The country is a welfare state. The government provides free universal health care, free education up through the tertiary level, and free public transportation for students, senior citizens, and the disabled. Mauritius is consistently ranked as the most peaceful country in Africa.

Socotra, locally known as Saqatri, is a Yemeni island in the Indian Ocean. Situated between the Guardafui Channel and the Arabian Sea, it lies near major shipping routes. Socotra is the largest of the six islands in the Socotra archipelago as it comprises around 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. It lies 380 kilometres south of the Arabian Peninsula and 232 km east of the Horn of Africa. The inhabitants of the island are called Socotrans, and they speak Arabic and Soqotri.

The island measures 132 km in length and 42 km across at its widest. In 2008, Socotra was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is under the control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a United Arab Emirates-backed, pro-Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), "secessionist" faction in Yemen's ongoing civil war. The STC seized control of the island following a coup in 2020, ousting the local authorities and establishing its own governance.

Socotra is home to a high number of unique species that are endemic to it. Up to a third of its plant life is unique. Due to the island's unusual geography, it has been described as "the most alien-looking place on Earth”. One example is the Dragon’s Blood Tree, or Draceana cinnabari, which may be the most well known example of Socotran endemism. The tree contains a bright red sap which is used commercially.

D. cinnabari has a very distinct appearance: Its trunk branches out into an umbrella-like crown with tightly packed leaves and widespread branches. This plant structure is observed in arid climates which have atmospheric moisture. Tightly packed leaves and wide spread branches facilitate the condensation of water from moisture in the air, and the shade provided by the umbrella crown may prevent evaporation of moisture from the soil. One dragon’s blood forest remains on the island. The average age of these trees is approximately 300 years. This suggests that the forest is over-mature, and indicates a decline in new growth.

Preveli Beach (Greek: Φοινικόδασος της Πρέβελης, Finikodasos tis Prevelis) is a beach located on the south coast of the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete. It is located in the municipality of Agios Vasilios in the Rethymno regional unit, not far from the Moni Preveli monastery, whose name also identifies the beach.

According to local legend, the king of Ithaca, Odysseus, remained in the wider area of Lake Preveli after the end of the Trojan War on his return to Ithaca from Troy. The area is a popular tourist destination due to the river, the forest with palm trees in the gorge along the banks of the river, and the sandy beach with clear  turquoise waters. On the beach, there is a rock in the shape of a heart, "The Lovers’ Stone" according to the locals. The area is accessible from the port of Plakias.

Asos (Greek: Άσος) is a village on the west coast of the island of Cephalonia, Greece and is located 36km north of Argostoli, the capital. It is part of the municipal unit Erisos. Asos was founded under Venetian rule and it served as the administrative capital of northern Cephalonia from 1593 onwards.

Marino Gentilini, an Italian army engineer, was commissioned by the Venetian Senate in 1593-1595 to build the Asos Castle, one of the largest in Greece. The castle was initially built with the view that it would protect local populations in case of an invading attack by passing Turks or pirates, but for various reasons, such as the lack of natural springs for water supply, it was never adopted as a fortress and gradually the grand plan was dropped

Nowadays, Asos is a picturesque fishing village that looks out onto the Ionian Sea and is full of colourful houses and narrow alleyways lined with bougainvilleas. Here, you can take a refreshing dip at Asos Beach, try local Greek cuisine at a waterfront cafe, and even hike up the Frourio Peninsula to see the remains of the  16th-century Venetian Castle. The lookout also offers stunning views of the turquoise waters and bluffs along Cephalonia’s north coast. The drive to Asos will take you down a steep and winding road. You can opt for a guided tour which often also includes stops at Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake.

Milos or Melos (Modern Greek: Μήλος, romanized: Mílos, Ancient Greek: Μῆλος, romanized: Mêlos) is a volcanic Greek island in the Aegean Sea, just north of the Sea of Crete. Milos is the southwestern-most island in the Cyclades group. The Venus de Milo (now in the Louvre), the Poseidon of Melos (now in the NAMA) and the Asclepius of Milos (now in the British Museum) were all found on the island, as was an archaic Apollo now in Athens.

Milos is a popular tourist destination during the summer. The municipality of Milos also includes the uninhabited offshore islands of Antimilos and Akradies. The combined land area is 160.147 square kilometres and at the 2021 census the population was 5,193 inhabitants.

The position of Milos, between mainland Greece and Crete, and its possession of obsidian (a volcanic glass), made it an important centre of early Aegean civilisation. Milos lost its arms-making importance when bronze became the preferred material for the manufacture of weapons, instead of obsidian.

While Milos is a lesser-known island within the extremely popular Cyclades archipelago, it has grown in popularity as a vacation destination in the past several decades. With its traditional Greek architecture, slower pace compared to Santorini and Mykonos, and its various excellent beaches, it provides a relaxed, sun-drenched, family-friendly and hospitable holiday destination.

Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometres off the southeastern coast of East Africa, east of Madagascar. It includes the main island (also called Mauritius), as well as Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon (Cargados Carajos shoals). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, along with nearby Réunion (a French overseas department), are part of the Mascarene Islands. The main island of Mauritius, where the population is concentrated, hosts the capital and largest city, Port Louis (see photo). The country spans 2,040 square kilometres and has an exclusive economic zone covering 2,300,000 square kilometres.

Given its geographic location and colonial past, the people of Mauritius are diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and faith. It is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the most practised religion. Indo-Mauritians make up the bulk of the population with significant Creole, Sino-Mauritian and Franco-Mauritian minorities. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system with Mauritius highly ranked for economic and political freedom. The Economist Democracy Index ranks Mauritius as the only country in Africa with full democracy.

Mauritius ranks 72nd (high) in the Human Development Index and the World Bank classifies it as a high-income economy. It is amongst the most competitive and most developed economies in the African region. The country is a welfare state. The government provides free universal health care, free education up through the tertiary level, and free public transportation for students, senior citizens, and the disabled. Mauritius is consistently ranked as the most peaceful country in Africa.

Paphos, also spelled as Pafos, is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District. In classical antiquity, two locations were called Paphos: Old Paphos, today known as Kouklia, and New Paphos. It is the fourth-largest city in the country, after Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca, with an urban population of 63,600 in 2018. The current city of Paphos lies on the Mediterranean coast, about 50 km west of Limassol (the biggest port on the island), both of which are connected by the A6 highway. Paphos International Airport is the country's second-largest airport, and is a gateway to western and southern Cyprus.

The city has a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, with the mildest temperatures on the island. In 1980, Paphos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its ancient architecture, mosaics, and ancient religious importance. It was selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2017 along with Aarhus.

Archaeological studies show that Old Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre for the cult of Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of Love and Beauty. Aphrodite's mythical birthplace was centred on this location on the island. The founding myth is interwoven with the goddess such that Old Paphos became the most famous and important place for worshipping Aphrodite in the ancient world.

Today, Paphos is a popular tourist resort and is home to a fishing harbour. Ktima is the main residential district while Kato Paphos, by the sea, is built around the medieval port and contains most of the luxury hotels and the entertainment infrastructure of the city. Apostolou Pavlou Avenue (St. Paul's Avenue), the busiest road in Paphos, connects the two quarters of the city. It begins near the city centre at Kennedy Square and ends outside the medieval fort at the harbour.

The economy of Paphos heavily depends on tourism and there are four resorts in the district: Kato Paphos, Coral Bay, Latchi, and Aphrodite Hills. The largest is Kato Paphos which employs over half of Paphos' population. Farming, especially banana, grape and tobacco cultivation, contributes significantly to Paphos' economy.
